English & Painting: 15 hours of English lessons per week plus, in the afternoons, either individual or maximum 2 students in painting classes with the local award-winning artist, Emma Carter, on location and in her studio. Materials provided. This course is available all year round (subject to availability) for all students from beginners to advanced. Take home your own original painting inspired by a beautiful Devon landscape!

English & Pottery: On this course, students have 15 hours of morning English lessons per week and in the afternoons, they can enjoy individual or small group classes with the pottery and ceramics artist Nicky Stevenson in her studio. Students receive clear, practical instructions from Nicky on how to make a variety of pots in a variety of different ways (thrown pots, pinch pots, coil pots and slab pots). They will also be given ideas for decorating their work and be encouraged to use the beautiful Devon coast and countryside as inspiration. All the materials are provided and you can take your work home. Even if there is not enough time to dry, fire and re-fire your work on time for you to take it home, we can post the finished work to you. The English & Pottery course is available from June 2013 for all students from beginners to advanced. If you prefer, you can combine pottery with some painting tuition (with artist Emma Carter) in your afternoon options.

About the artists

Emma Carter's best known works are large oils with locally-inspired, vast, open beaches and wide anonymous seas. She says, “I have been lucky enough to have spent a lot of time on a small island in Devon called Burgh Island where I have studied and experienced the forces of the elements and nature's course.” Emma's open compositions provide a visual escape into a serene and natural world. She has produced numerous pieces for galleries & solo exhibitions, corporate commissions and private collections worldwide. Recent commissions have included seascapes for ex-Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Nicky Stevenson completed her Ceramics Degree at Middlesex University in 1986. She drew and painted throughout her college life and her career as a prop maker and designer in theatre, film and television. Nicky worked in Liverpool as Head of Props at the Liverpool Playhouse and the Everyman Theatre. She now lives in Brixham and makes art full time. She is also the owner of The Nicky Stevenson Gallery in Brixham. Nicky finds inspiration in everyday life, literature and many different cultures. Nicky has become a well-known artist through exhibitions of her work both in the UK and abroad, and through the publication of her work as greeting cards, prints, and mugs. More recently, Nicky has written and illustrated stories for children, which are well-loved by children and adults.
