To: 08/07/17
Location: RTYC, Beacon Terrace, Torquay

The Offshore Week is a flotilla style race week combining racing, cruising and social activities. The itinerary takes into account yachts and sailors of wide ranging ages and abilities. It has grown over 20 years to become a highly successful, enjoyable and well supported event. Typically attracting 20 yachts or more with combined crew over a hundred. (now limited to 25 Yachts) The Royal Torbay Yacht Club links up with, the South Devon Combined Yacht Clubs and attract yachts from Plymouth, Salcombe, Dartmouth, the Exe Estuary, Teignmouth and Torbay. Racing competitively in offshore mode, bfully equipped and all living aboard and experiencing some of the wildly differing tidal and coastal regimes of the Channel Islands, North Brittany and Normandy. Although the majority take the racing very seriously (what sailor doesn’t!!). It’s not all about racing; many family crewed boats attend for whom the cruising destinations are the draw. Social activities take place most evenings and include, elaborate fancy dress nights, karaoke, quizzes, treasure hunts, sports and not least of all the opportunity to discuss the days sailing over a beer with friends new and old. The region sailed is challenging. The value of sailing as a fleet provides some reassurance especially to those who have not crossed the Channel before who are able to benefit from the company and guidance of veterans. Yachts can be IRC or Non IRC rated. From 25 to 45 feet, maximum draft 2.5m the racing requires all yachts to be equipped and qualify for ISAF Special Regulation Category 3 with life raft. Click on the link below to see the details. However this is all about safety and we should all be sailing to this safety level whenever we cross the Channel. In addition to our traditional fist stop St Peter Port we hope to include visits to St Hellier, Granville, Carteret and Alderney. Contact Tel: 01803 292006

Ways With Words

To: 17/07/17
Location: The Dartington Hall Trust, Dartington, Totnes

We started Ways With Words in 1991 and thought we would like to run a one-off literature festival at Dartington Hall. One festival was obviously not going to satisfy the large number of people who came to the first festival and so Ways With Words became an annual event. Word about the festival spread quickly and we received invitations from all over the place to run festivals in other parts of the country. As you can see from our web site we now run a number of festivals of different sizes as well as creative holidays abroad. Ways With Words has always existed to promote both the written and the spoken word. We want to bring people together in beautiful surroundings to make contact with writers, journalists and experts in various fields - to talk, to argue, to listen, to engage and to learn. The legacy left by Jeff Lynne & The Electric Light Orchestra barely needs any introduction – suffice to say that between 1972 and 1986 they achieved more combined UK and US Top 40 hits than any other band on the planet! 10538 Overture, Evil Woman, Living Thing, Diary of Horace Wimp, Don't Bring me Down and of course Mr Blue Sky went on to become the soundtrack of our lives. In 2016 Jeff Lynne’s ELO came back to prominence with the release of a brand new album - Alone In The Universe and a UK and World tour. The ELO Experience 2017 tour will included some of the new material from the new album but will have many songs from the Out of The Blue album to celebrate its 40th Birthday year. Blending rock rhythms with classical influences, ELO also released many classic albums such as A New World Record, Discovery and Out of the Blue, and many sell out tours further established them as one of the most important and influential bands ever. The ELO Experience are the world's foremost tribute to The Electric Light Orchestra. With a sensational string section, a stunning light show and large screen projection to further enhance the experience, why not come along and enjoy this incredible show which accurately reproduces the songs and sounds and takes you on a magical musical journey through time. Dirty Dancing 2017

To: 05/08/17
Location: Princess Theatre, Torbay Road, Torquay

Have the time of your life with the ultimate live experience; Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage. Full of passion and romance, heart-pounding music and sensationally sexy dancing, the record-breaking musical is even better than before in this all new production. The classic story of Baby and Johnny returns, following two blockbuster West End runs and two hit UK Tours, featuring the hit songs 'Hungry Eyes', ‘Hey! Baby’, ‘Do You Love Me?’ and the heart stopping ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’. It’s the summer of 1963, and 17 year- old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman is about to learn some major lessons in life as well as a thing or two about dancing. On holiday in New York’s Catskill Mountains with her older sister and parents, she shows little interest in the resort activities, and instead discovers her own entertainment when she stumbles across an all-night dance party at the staff quarters. Mesmerised by the raunchy dance moves and the pounding rhythms, Baby can’t wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of Johnny Castle the resort dance instructor. Her life is about to change forever as she is thrown in at the deep end as Johnny’s leading lady both on-stage and off, two fiercely independent young spirits from different worlds come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives. Shaldon Water Carnival

Location: Ferry Beach, Marine Parade, Shaldon, Devon, TQ14 0DL

Every year the Shaldon Water Carnival Committee put on an event to rival the most eccentric of ceremonies. Somewhere between a carnival and a regatta, the Shaldon Water Carnival provides a day of creative explosions, colourful entertainment and nautical brilliance. It is difficult to encapsulate exactly what the carnival entails, as there is a myriad of events throughout the day. The earlier stages of the celebrations take place on Ferry Beach, but it is far from a conventional trip to the seaside. Beach competitions of many natures are among the highlights of the day, along with an assortment of stalls. The carnival makes the absolute most of Shaldon’s seaside location, by offering activities such as sand sculpturing and crab collecting. The kids will love it, whether they want to take part in the fancy dress parade or get down to some quiet painting, they are catered for. Adults are not forgotten though, chef demonstrations and craft stalls run throughout the day. The money raised goes towards local clubs, charities and organisations which are often connected to young people. Shaldon Water Carnival is the personification of community spirit, wherein for one day in August normal responsibilities are dropped and the town comes together for a day of merriment. Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust - Seabirds and Paella

Location: Berry Head Visitor Centre, Berry Head, Brixham, Devon, TQ5 9AP

Learn more about sea watching and migrating seabirds, for keen birdwatchers. Trawlers regularly return from a day’s fishing in Lyme Bay during the evening sometimes with flocks of seabirds following them. Skuas, Shearwaters and Terns are all likely to be found among the gulls but identification can be tricky and local expert Mike Langman will pass on some of his 40 years’ experience of watching seabirds and indeed marine wildlife including the resident Harbour Porpoises. We will sit at the bottom of the quarry during this evening watch and Mike will tell you how to watch and what to look for whatever the weather. The evening light provides some of the very best viewing opportunities for passing seabirds at Berry Head, far better than the, often, silhouetted morning sightings, however depending on weather conditions views might still be distant. Berry Head is perhaps the best place in Britain for seeing the globally threatened Balearic Shearwater although a sighting cannot be guaranteed! One thing that will be guaranteed is the delicious paella and a cold drink at the café after our watch.
