The Martini Encounter

Location: Palace Theatre Palace Avenue Paignton Devon TQ3 3HF

The Martini Encounter is a fun filled, alcohol infused cabaret that follows three fabulously flamboyant characters through tales of their demise, pastiche musical comedy and lots and lots of gin. Broadwayworld.com described this show as – “a must-see cacophony of cocktails and repertoire” and with a name like “The Martini Encounter” its safe to say that the show is boozy by name and boozy by nature. THE MARTINI ENCOUNTER in ‘Naughty…hugely enjoyable…in perfect harmony’ The Times A cacophony of song, ukuleles, murder and gin Enter the jaded and threadbare world of Binkie, Maud and Colin. Basking in a glorious, deluded and surprising cocktail of mischievous repartee and banging toons and vocal harmony, they take us from Basingstoke to Basildon and Crawley to Cromer by way of Talking Heads and Queen to Blur and Scissor Sisters via Bonnie Tyler, with Binkie and Maud on their ukuleles and accompanied by failed Magician The Amazing Colin on the pianoforte. Following sensationally squiffy appearances at the Edinburgh, Glastonbury and Latitude Festivals, this witty and wicked trio now embark upon their first of many farewell tours with their musical assault upon the nation. Absolutely hilarious **** London Theatre1.com A cabaret act with a twist, Who Shot Wayne Sleep is a show packed with wit, insanity, naughtiness and a dash of sparkle…Completely hilarious…super slick; wonderful musicians and excellent vocalists…brilliant writing…The Martini Encounter offers good theatre but an even better night out. Location: Torquay Museum 529 Babbacombe Road Torquay Devon TQ1 1HF

As part of Torquay Museum's Explorer Season, come and listen to Devon based Polar Explorer, Antony Jinman talking about his expeditions to the Geographic North and South Poles. Antony Jinman is a modern day polar explorer and educational entrepreneur who is pioneering how technology can be used to share experiences and credible information through “Live Learning”. In 2014 Jinman skied 730 miles solo to the Geographic South Pole in just 46 days, whilst interacting with over 8000 pupils in schools around the world, allowing them to share in the experience and debate issues online with “Live learning” scientists and educators. Upon reaching the pole he made history by becoming the 12th Briton ever to have reached both the Geographic North and South Poles, his very own Olympic polar gold. With 16 expeditions into both the Arctic and Antarctica Antony brings a wealth of experience and knowledge. You may believe that there is nothing left to explore, that the world has been mapped and that the age of exploration and explorers on our planet is at an end. But you’d be mistaken; there is a need today as much as there has ever been, if only to inspire the hearts and minds of future generations about the world around them. This is a fundraising event for Torquay Museum. Tickets cost £5. 2 pm

T.Rextasy

Location: Princess Theatre Torbay Road Torquay Devon TQ2 5EZ

Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. With Bolan's special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs throughout the 1970s including 'Telegram Sam' and 'Jeepster' he was able to obtain what would be yet another Top 20 record in 1976 that has since become one of the most memorable and everlasting signature tunes, 'I Love to Boogie'. T.Rextasy have now been performing around the world for over 20 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc’s very own T.Rex. The band is now accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management. The band has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’. Truly a rock’n’roll concert for all ages - If you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this show is for you! T.Rextasy – awarded the accolade of ‘The Best Live Tribute Band in the UK ’ by BBC1 TV. ‘They’re the closest you’re ever going to get to the real thing’ Bill Legend (original T.Rex drummer) ‘T.Rextasy are the tribute act who break all the rules by being bloody brilliant. Danielz is an exact replica of Marc, he’s uncanny.’ The Independent on Sunday ‘Danielz is a curator of Bolan’s life, a perfectionist protector of the legacy – T.Rextasy play with a poignant, flamboyant skill.’ The Observer ‘Danielz looks and sounds uncannily like Bolan and has dedicated his life to the man’ The Times “Danielz is more than a career lookalike. Here we have a serious guitarist with the animal grace of early Bolan and the clear unequivocal love of the music” The Stage “Danielz just freaks me out!” Mickey Finn (original T.Rex percussionist)

Torbay Festival of Poetry

To: 23/10/17
Location: Livermead Cliff Hotel Torbay Road Torquay Devon TQ2 6RQ

Welcome to this year’s Torbay Festival of Poetry programme. Thank you to all who used the Festival website last year to order tickets, enter the competition or find out more about the poets waiting to entertain you. Our popular Thursday evening party-style opening event is once again at Torre Abbey where we will be taking a wry look at the Poets’ Laureate throughout the ages, from John Skelton to the present day. They are not always the reputable rhymers you may have thought they were. This year is the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Cornish poet, Charles Causley, and the Festival will be marking the occasion with an event about the life and poetry of the well-loved poet. We will also celebrate the Brontë family with an event which looks at how the sisters and their brother Branwell were influenced by their clergyman father, Patrick Brontë. So with poets being put ‘On the Spot’ and the popular Open Mic lunchtime sessions giving everyone a chance to strut their stuff, there is much variety in this year’s programme. The subject for the Festival Challenge will be announced at the Thursday evening event at Torre Abbey and then will be displayed at the main Festival Hotel. Torre Abbey has the distinction of not only being Torquay’s oldest building, but also of being the best surviving medieval monastery in Devon and Cornwall. Founded in 1196 by six Canons of the Premonstratensian order – or White Canons if you wish to avoid becoming totally tongue tied – it grew and prospered until, by the fifteenth century, it had become the order’s richest Abbey in the country. With twenty five events, poetry will fill the weekend. As well as listening to readings, learning more about writing poetry at workshops and listening to poets talking about their craft, you can meet the poets and, above all, ask questions of them. Visitors to the Festival enjoy the convivial atmosphere of the Livermead Cliff Hotel, which is situated on the water’s edge. This is a long weekend which celebrates all things poetic in the heart of beautiful Torbay: sea, palm trees, light … and inspiration! For ease of administration, single appropriate prices will be charged for each event. Tea / Coffee and the famous shortbreads are included in the price of certain events. The Festival’s aim of a packed schedule of events, mainly concentrated at the comfortable Livermead Cliff Hotel, has established an inspiring literary weekend by the sea with the added advantage of the beautiful English Riviera as a backdrop.

Dartmouth Food Festival

To: 22/10/17
Location: The Market Square Dartmouth Devon TQ6 9DR

The Dartmouth Food Festival is an annual festival celebrating all things food and wine. Now in our 14th year, the festival has developed into a major food event or, as The Daily Telegraph put it (February 2011), a ‘heady mix of celebrity chefs, parties, food markets, tasting shacks and demonstrations.' “One of the top 10 Food Festivals in the UK.” – The Guardian What gives us extra stand out is the fact that we’re a free festival! Anyone and everyone is welcome to come along and take part without being charged an entry fee. Our real aim is to showcase the best that the South West has to offer – from Ashridge Cider and Cornish Seasalt through to the Devon Scone Company and South Devon Chilli Farm. We also want to shout about our award winning restaurants (The Seahorse, The Elephant in Torquay and the Millbrook Inn, South Pool to name but a few) and their amazing chefs. An Evening With Charlie Landsborough

Location: Princess Theatre Torbay Road Torquay Devon TQ2 5EZ

Charlie is generally recognised and categorised as a country singer, however, as his regular supporters will tell you, country music actually only accounts for a very small part of his concert repertoire and music catalogue in general. It is of course understandable that Charlie has been labelled as a country singer, as he has won just about every award possible in the UK country scene. A list of awards too numerous to mention in full, he has won Best Songwriter, Best Song, Best Male Vocalist, Best Album and International Country Album of the year. He has also received a nomination as Best Global Country Artist in the Country Music Association Awards in Nashville. Many of his albums have topped the country charts as well as getting into the British pop charts. His talent and ability received the ultimate recognition when he was inducted into the British Country Music Hall of Fame in 2011 - “for promoting and for services to the advancement of Country Music in Great Britain and in recognition of outstanding contributions, leadership and service to the British Country Music industry”. This is a wonderful achievement for any artist and it’s one Charlie is very proud of. Unfortunately, this success in country music has in some ways labelled him and detracted from the true recognition he deserves in other categories of music. Regardless of this label we actually find that when people who are not country fans are introduced to his music they love his work. Charlie is a performer who is difficult to categorise, as he covers many areas of the musical landscape from beautiful ballads, to folk, blues, country, rock ‘n’ roll, pop, gospel and anthem. If you go into a music shop you may find Charlie’s music in the Country or the Easy Listening section, but this belies the nature of a man who is uncomfortable with labels, a man that embraces varied musical forms. Anyone who has listened to Charlie’s music would agree that he shows a depth of compassion and understanding which seems almost incongruous to his simplistic yet captivating style. Charlie is a true and immensely talented star, he is a well proven writer of fabulous songs, and is well known and well loved for his wonderful voice, but it is in his ability to tell a fine tale that we find a hidden gem. It is with this talent for spinning the yarn that we see him venturing into the realm of comedy, offering a fine compliment to the music and giving the concerts a real sense of intimacy. Indeed one of Charlie’s main attributes is that to this day, in-spite of all of his fame and achievements, he remains the same warm, humble, likable, down to earth, compassionate person. We are sure you will have a very memorable evening, as he has achieved a winning formula which has made an impact on so many professionals and fans alike. Every time Charlie tours we get inundated with comments from theatre staff and attendees stating how they have enjoyed his concerts.

All or Nothing

To: 04/11/17
Location: Princess Theatre Torbay Road Torquay Devon TQ2 5EZ

All or Nothing Written by Carol Harrison and directed by Tony McHale In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded onto the dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the class-ridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were working-class free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas. The sharpest Mod of all was known as a ‘FACE’. The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat, clothes obsessed and street-wise. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion, their dedication to Rhythm ‘n’ Blues. This ‘Mod’ Musical is a trans-generational musical experience celebrating the unique sound of the iconic Mod band, The Small Faces. Featuring the music of the Small Faces, including an arsenal of brilliant hits like Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Lazy Sunday, Tin Soldier, Sha La La La Lee, Itchycoo Park and of course All Or Nothing, PREVIOUS TOUR REVIEWS: 'Funny fiery and brave… you’ll have a rocking night out' The Daily Star Sunday, 'I know the band would be so proud of this show' Mollie Marriott 'Great music and fantastic energy of a wonderful cast' PP Arnold 'The group capture that unmistakable mix of anger and arrogance that defined the Mod sound.' Michael Portillo - Life: A Game of Two Halves

Location: Babbacombe Theatre Babbacombe Downs Road Torquay Devon TQ1 3LU

It took Michael Portillo little more than 10 years to get a seat in the Commons and then rise in power and esteem to a point where he was a favoured leader of his party and possible future PM. A track record like that suggests to many a privileged friend of the rich and famous with little or no understanding of or care for the ordinary citizen. But since leaving the house a decade ago Michael has endeared himself to many with his obvious respect for solid workmanship and creative energy, as found in our great Victorian Railways, and the daily toil of the working man. An historian at heart, he has used a Victorian railway guide to take millions of viewers on a historical voyage of discovery throughout the UK, Ireland, the USA and Europe. Listen to his extraordinary story and then feel free to question him about it.

The Solid Gold Rock n Roll Show 2017

Location: Princess Theatre Torbay Road Torquay Devon TQ2 5EZ

Join us in celebrating Marty Wilde’s 60th anniversary in the business and together with Eden Kane, Mike Berry, and The Wildcats, as well as very special guest Mark Wynter, he join forces in The Solid Gold Rock n Roll Show. The late fifties and early sixties were without doubt some of the most exciting and important years in the history of music. With the arrival of rock n’ roll, a whole new pop culture was born. Performing their own hits and collaborating live on stage, Marty, Eden, Mike and Mark, teen idols of their day, show us how rock n’ roll with its fusion of sound and rhythm shaped the style of music that we listened to then and still do today. Includes hits such as A Teenager In Love, Rubber Ball, Donna, I Don’t Know Why, Well I Ask You, Don’t You Think It’s Time, The Sunshine of Your Smile, Venus In Blue Jeans, Go Away Little Girl, and many, many more

Van Morrison

Location: Princess Theatre Torbay Road Torquay Devon TQ2 5EZ

The Belfast-born legend is one of the most revered and decorated musicians of recent times. He was knighted last year, has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has won six Grammys, a BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution and the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement. Born in 1945 as George Ivan Morrison, Sir Van was inspired by musical greats such as Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Muddy Waters, Mahalia Jackson and Leadbelly. He was a travelling musician at 13 and singing, playing guitar and sax, in several bands, before forming Them in 1964. Them established Morrison as a major force in the British R&B scene. His matchless vocal and songwriting talents produced instant classics such as the much-covered Gloria and Here Comes The Night. After working with Them’s New York producer Bert Berns on beautiful Top 40 pop hit Brown Eyed Girl, released in 1967, Morrison moved to another realm. The breadth and reach of his collaboration work continued in 2015 with the release of his album Duets: Re-working The Catalogue. Featuring singers as influential and diverse as Bobby Womack, Gregory Porter, Mavis Staples and Michael Bublé, the album re-works songs handpicked from Morrison’s catalogue of over 360 tracks across his career.

Milton Jones is Out There

Location: Princess Theatre Torbay Road Torquay Devon TQ2 5EZ

Milton Jones is Out There. No, really out there and this time he hasn't just forgotten his keys. He's holding up the mirror of truth to society, and he can see right through it, which means its probably just a window. In his brand new show he'll be putting his foot down and lifting the lid on the pedal bin of lies of the media (which doesn't include this press release obviously). He will also be scaling the heights of fashion at the risk of falling into a terrible cravat. Milton will be talking about his life so far - the ups, the downs and why buying his own see-saw was the best decision he ever made. But perhaps he should give all this up and seek the highest office in the land - but how do you get a desk and a swivel chair up a mountain? Oh and now he wants to be Prime Minister too. Can we do worse than the politicians we already have? Yes we can! 'Pun-derful Jones leaces the audience gagging for more'★★★★★Metro 'Jones's one-liners reach a new height'★★★★Time Out 'Beautiful one liners so skillfully sculpted, you don't know whether to laugh or put them on your mantlepeice''Be★★★★Guardian 'Absurdist one-line masterpieces'The Times 'The best one-liner merchant in British comedy' Chortle

I thought 'no way, it was last year wasn't it? Anyway, long story short, they were right, it was years ago! I just got fooled cos I've been on tour doing musicals and the last tour is repeated on Dave ja Vu 13 times a day!
