English Riviera Film Festival

To: 18/06/17
Location: Throughout the English Riviera

Cinematic past and future meet at the 2017 English Riviera Film Festival Paignton Picture House is confirmed as one of the new partners in the ‘bigger and better‘ English Riviera Film Festival 2017, bringing Torbay’s historic cinema into play alongside the acting and directing hopefuls of tomorrow. The Film Festival has moved up a gear in what is now its third year, with a change of venue for the main day’s events to the Riviera Centre, which will play host to a packed programme of screenings, talks and interviews on Saturday June 17th. Other venues hosting satellite events throughout festival week will be The Blue Walnut cafe and cinema in Torquay, Paignton Library, Cockington Court, Torquay’s Artizan Gallery and Paignton Picture House, which will be opening its doors to interested parties for a tour of one of the most fondly regarded buildings in Torbay. Festival Director John Tomkins, himself an independent film maker, says he has been thrilled by the positive response to the project. “The 2017 event really will be the English Riviera’s own Film Festival, a community partnership bringing together diverse organisations, individuals and businesses. There’s a genuine enthusiasm and will to bring the festival together and although 2017 really will be bigger and better than last year’s event, it will also, in a sense, be closer to home because of that collaboration from the Bay-wide community.” John has always wanted to help promote the wealth of creative talent in Torbay and the independent film sector in Devon as a whole, which is why a highlight of this year’s Festival will be the inaugural Young Film-Maker of the Year Awards, with special trophies crafted by Our Glass of Cockington. The awards are the result of Tomkins’ collaboration with South Devon College. “I’m really pleased that this particular aspect of the festival has come to fruition, because it will enable raw film-making and acting talent to gain the wider exposure it deserves.” Another example of the community aspect of this year’s festival is a focus on Brixham. Tomkins is working with South Devon College and the Brixfest committee to produce a film about the fishing town and the surrounding coast and countryside.

Henning Wehn

Location: Babbacombe Theatre, Babbacombe Downs Road, Torquay

oin German Comedy Ambassador Henning Wehn for an evening of Teutonic jolliness at its best. He also wonders, if, generally speaking, people are competent. Luckily in his case this doesn’t matter as either he’s funny or he lives up to a national stereotype. It’s a win-win situation. www.henningwehn.de Henning Wehn will be recording the DVD of his new show on these two nights and we are therefore able to offer tickets at the very special price of £13.50 - this offer is available only at the Babbacombe Theatre so join us on one of these exciting evenings for this unique comedy event Contact Tel: 01803 328385

Torbay Air Show

To: 04/06/17
Location:

Torbay Airshow has announced the initial military aircraft line-up for when it returns this spring, on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 June. Joining the RAF display teams will be The Tigers Freefall Parachute Display Team, world aerobatic competitor Gerald Cooper in his Extreme XA41, the Gyro Display, the Raven Aerobatic team, the Strikemaster, the Piston Provost and former British Female Aerobatic Champion Lauren Richardson in the Pitts Special. Displays from the RAF will include the world’s premier acrobatic team the Red Arrows, as well as the Typhoon jet and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight aircraft – the Hawker Hurricane, Avro Lancaster and Supermarine Spitfire. The two day show, which had its inaugural event last year takes place on Paignton Green with the Bay providing a stunning natural amphitheatre for viewing the air displays and the perfect location for a large coastal airshow event. The action-packed flying programme will take place over two full afternoons on Saturday and Sunday alongside ground displays, entertainment, trade stands, fair rides, bars and catering within the event village on Paignton Green. Further confirmation on ground displays and entertainment are expected to be announced over the coming months. All air displays will take place on both the Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Tigers were formed over 20 years ago and are firmly established as one of the top parachute display teams in the country, they are the flagship team for the Princess of Wales’ Royal Regiment. Gerald Cooper is a UK aerobatic pilot repeatedly ranked in the top ten at the World Aerobatic Championships. Flying his Extreme XA41, his flying style is aggressive and highly accurate which means his displays are always distinctive, innovative and hugely popular. The Gyro flying display, also known as a Gyrocopter or Gyroplane, is described as a flying windmill or a rotating parachute which looks like a sycamore seed gently floating down as it spins. Team Raven are a formation aerobatic display team featuring 6 Vans’s RV8 and RV4 aircraft, which have been modified with smoke systems. A British jet-powered training and light-attack aircraft, the Strikemaster is a development of the Hunting Jet Provost trainer, a jet engineered version of the Percival Provost, which originally flew in 1950 with a radial piston engine. The Strikemaster is an armed version of the Jet Provost trainer aircraft and is operated by NWMAS (North Wales Military Aviation Services Ltd). The Piston Provost first flew in 1950, with an initial order for 200 placed by the RAF 12 months later. The Provost was introduced into RAF service as a new advanced training scheme for potential RAF pilots. At just 29, Lauren Richardson is one of the top aerobatic display pilots in the UK, performing in an iconic modified Pitts Special aerobatic biplane. All air displays are subject to change depending on weather conditions and operational commitments that could take the military displays elsewhere at short notice. The event is run by Torbay Council. For further information on the event and to keep up to date with the latest news follow @torbayairshow on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or visit the event website www.torbayairshow.com

Our aim has always been to be self funding, and we manage that most the time! Meet over 200 makers. Germaine Greer - 'Women for Life on Earth'

Location: Brixham Theatre, New Road, Brixham

Feminist icon, TV and radio personality, controversial agenda setting author, acclaimed academic, outspoken broadcaster and ground breaking publisher, Germaine Greer is regarded as one of the most controversial personalities of our times and a major voice of the feminist movement, since creating controversy with her first book ‘The Female Eunuch’. Following a glittering academic career, earning her a PhD from Cambridge University and BA & MA from Melbourne and Sydney Universities, she went on to lecture, as well as writing columns for Oz Magazine and Private Eye. She has appeared on the cover of ‘Life Magazine’, rarely been out of the media news and made regular TV appearances on "Have I Got News for You", ‘The Late Review’, ‘Angry Old Women’ and ‘Celebrity Big Brother’. Women for life on earth: the inevitability of ecofeminism. When Welsh women turned up at the RAF base at Greenham Common in 1981, they were carrying a banner that read ‘Women for Life on Earth’. Theirs was direct action, born of gut reaction, virtually innocent of theoretical framework. Feminists can be found wherever the planet and our fellow earthlings are in trouble. They shepherd stranded cetaceans back into deeper water, stand in front of lorries carrying live animals to slaughter, lash themselves to conveyor belts in protest against the logging of old-growth forests, march and lobby against the threat of fracking. The action they cannot be moved to take on their own behalf, they take on behalf of the planet. If the planet is to survive and human beings continue to inhabit it, this female energy must be unleashed. This discussion evening will give the chance to ask all those burning questions, serious or light hearted, from politics to poetry, the role of women in third world countries, to Shakespeare's women or sex and the over sixties! Expect this unique face to face encounter with the Prof. to be candid, pithy, enlightening, highly entertaining and not to be missed. Ms Greer will be meeting the audience and signing books after the show. Contact Tel: 01803 882717

Racing competitively in offshore mode, bfully equipped and all living aboard and experiencing some of the wildly differing tidal and coastal regimes of the Channel Islands, North Brittany and Normandy. Although the majority take the racing very seriously (what sailor doesn’t!!). It’s not all about racing; many family crewed boats attend for whom the cruising destinations are the draw. Social activities take place most evenings and include, elaborate fancy dress nights, karaoke, quizzes, treasure hunts, sports and not least of all the opportunity to discuss the days sailing over a beer with friends new and old. The region sailed is challenging. The value of sailing as a fleet provides some reassurance especially to those who have not crossed the Channel before who are able to benefit from the company and guidance of veterans. Yachts can be IRC or Non IRC rated. From 25 to 45 feet, maximum draft 2.5m the racing requires all yachts to be equipped and qualify for ISAF Special Regulation Category 3 with life raft. Click on the link below to see the details. However this is all about safety and we should all be sailing to this safety level whenever we cross the Channel. Ways With Words

To: 17/07/17
Location: The Dartington Hall Trust, Dartington, Totnes

We started Ways With Words in 1991 and thought we would like to run a one-off literature festival at Dartington Hall. One festival was obviously not going to satisfy the large number of people who came to the first festival and so Ways With Words became an annual event. Word about the festival spread quickly and we received invitations from all over the place to run festivals in other parts of the country. As you can see from our web site we now run a number of festivals of different sizes as well as creative holidays abroad. Ways With Words has always existed to promote both the written and the spoken word. We want to bring people together in beautiful surroundings to make contact with writers, journalists and experts in various fields - to talk, to argue, to listen, to engage and to learn. The ELO Experience

Location: Princess Theatre, Torbay Road Torquay

The legacy left by Jeff Lynne & The Electric Light Orchestra barely needs any introduction – suffice to say that between 1972 and 1986 they achieved more combined UK and US Top 40 hits than any other band on the planet! 10538 Overture, Evil Woman, Living Thing, Diary of Horace Wimp, Don't Bring me Down and of course Mr Blue Sky went on to become the soundtrack of our lives. In 2016 Jeff Lynne’s ELO came back to prominence with the release of a brand new album - Alone In The Universe and a UK and World tour. The ELO Experience 2017 tour will included some of the new material from the new album but will have many songs from the Out of The Blue album to celebrate its 40th Birthday year. Blending rock rhythms with classical influences, ELO also released many classic albums such as A New World Record, Discovery and Out of the Blue, and many sell out tours further established them as one of the most important and influential bands ever. The ELO Experience are the world's foremost tribute to The Electric Light Orchestra. With a sensational string section, a stunning light show and large screen projection to further enhance the experience, why not come along and enjoy this incredible show which accurately reproduces the songs and sounds and takes you on a magical musical journey through time. Dirty Dancing 2017

To: 05/08/17
Location: Princess Theatre, Torbay Road, Torquay

Have the time of your life with the ultimate live experience; Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage. Full of passion and romance, heart-pounding music and sensationally sexy dancing, the record-breaking musical is even better than before in this all new production. The classic story of Baby and Johnny returns, following two blockbuster West End runs and two hit UK Tours, featuring the hit songs 'Hungry Eyes', ‘Hey! Baby’, ‘Do You Love Me?’ and the heart stopping ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’. It’s the summer of 1963, and 17 year- old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman is about to learn some major lessons in life as well as a thing or two about dancing. On holiday in New York’s Catskill Mountains with her older sister and parents, she shows little interest in the resort activities, and instead discovers her own entertainment when she stumbles across an all-night dance party at the staff quarters. Mesmerised by the raunchy dance moves and the pounding rhythms, Baby can’t wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of Johnny Castle the resort dance instructor. Her life is about to change forever as she is thrown in at the deep end as Johnny’s leading lady both on-stage and off, two fiercely independent young spirits from different worlds come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives.
