Depending on your target score, we recommend a minimum of 4 weeks' preparation. It is possible to join courses for shorter periods, but strictly by arrangement with the school. It is possible to continue studying IELTS over longer periods.

In data recorded since 2009 from over 200 test entrants, our IELTS course students improve their band scores by 1.2 points on average in classroom testing and by 1.0 point in actual testing. The average start level band score is 4.2 and the average final test band score is 5.3.

What is IELTS?

IELTS is the world’s proven English test. Over 1.5 million candidates take the test each year to start their journeys into international education and employment. IELTS is recognised by more than 9000 institutions in over 145 countries.

Students at the Devon School of English usually take the IELTS test in order to study at a university in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and for an increasing number of universities in the United States. Some students need to get a certain score to be able to emigrate to Australia and New Zealand or to qualify for visas in the UK.

When can I take the IELTS test?

There are IELTS test dates at least once a month in the South West of England. You can take the test in Torquay, Plymouth, Exeter and Bristol. Students who require visas to study in the UK, need to take the test at a UKVI Centre.

You can book a test date yourself or we can help you with your application when you arrive. Test dates do fill up quickly, especially in the summer, so it is a good idea to reserve your space a month or two in advance if you can. If you need any help or advice with your application, please contact and cc

What score will I need?

Most UK universities require a minimum score of 6.5 to enter their courses. Universities will usually demand a score of around 5.5 to enter an English or EAP course prior to your degree or post-graduate course. Check with your chosen university for details.

Why choose to study IELTS at the Devon School of English?

We have a long history of preparing students for all Cambridge Exams. Because of the nature of the IELTS test with its demanding Writing and Speaking sections, a quality preparation course with experienced teachers is strongly advised. Our IELTS Preparation Courses are designed to be taken in the four weeks leading up to a test date, but they can be taken earlier if you prefer. The courses are taught by qualified teachers with lots of experience of preparing students for the test. You will follow a syllabus that has been carefully designed to take you step-by-step up to the required level, looking at essay and report writing, test skills, common errors, as well as the most useful language in the test. The courses utilise the best available materials and students are directed to self-study and online resources to help them outside the school.

As the exam date approaches, you will be given mock interviews and plenty of practice using past examination papers to ensure you are exam ready. You will be carefully monitored by your class teacher and be given daily homework. Free individual student counselling with the Director of Studies is available to all IELTS Preparation Course students. The school can arrange your IELTS test application and help you to arrange transport test centres.

Please note: If you are under 18 booking on a General English 15 hour course, you will be at school and supervised Monday to Friday from 09:00 until 12:30. If you are booking on a English 23 hour course you will be in school from 09:00 until 15:30 Monday to Thursday, finishing on Friday at 12:30. Outside of these periods, and during the 30 minute morning coffee break and 60 minute lunch break, you will not be supervised and will have free time in the afternoons after lessons, in the evenings and at weekends.

We do provide information and support for the students on staying safe in their free time, and a wide range of afternoon and evening activities and day trips at weekend are organized by the school – students need to book and pay for these individually. There are full day excursions organized at the weekends, and students can book and pay for these during the week. It is also possible by arrangement for you to join some of the activities of our teenager school which runs in parallel (again on a pay-as-you-go basis).
