The Director of Studies

Anthony Dolphin

Director of Studies

I've been teaching English since 1997. I joined the Devon School in January 2009 after working for nearly ten years in Tokyo as a Director of Studies, teacher trainer and a writer and designer. I had previously worked as a teacher in Greece and London. I studied Fine Art at university and originally taught art before becoming an English teacher out of a desire to travel. I have Master's Degrees in Applied Linguistics & TESOL and another in Visual Theory & Aesthetics.

As the academic Director of Studies, I am here to give guidance to teachers and students; oversee class materials and courses; and I also make some of the school's promotional material and website content.

Hobbies & interests: Writing & recording music, going to concerts, outsider art & music, painting, drawing & printmaking, going to galleries, writing, watching football, philosophy (especially aesthetics), politics, watching films, walking, reading and visiting old buildings.

Favourite places in Devon: The Music Room at Sharpham House and Gallants Bower in Dartmouth.

Favourite book: 'Speak, Memory' by Vladimir Nabokov

Favourite film: Powell & Pressburger's 'A Canterbury Tale'

Favourite English food: Butterscotch Angel Delight
